umbilical cord blood composition, and methods for treating a malignant disease or benign disorder associated with the hemoatopoietic system and for preparing an umbilical cord blood composition the umbilical cord (ucb) blood compositions of the present invention comprise the unique characteristics to have plasma that is substantially depleted from the ucb unit and red blood cells (rbc) that are not depleted from the ucb unit. Said ucb units can be prepared by a process that combines plasma depletion with cryopreservation, selection, thawing, and / or transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells providing superior clinical outcome by maximizing cell recovery after processing and dose of infusion cells after thawing. Also provided are methods for treating a wide variety of malignant and benign diseases associated with the hemoatopoietic system by administering the ucb compositions of the present invention.
