A method for operating a reconfigurable differential protection scheme for performing differential protection of a power grid (10) is provided, the power grid (10) comprising a plurality of terminals (12, 14, 16, 18), each of the plurality of terminals (12, 14, 16, 18) configured to communicate with each other with the plurality of terminals (12, 14, 16, 18) within a communications network, the method comprising the steps of: - controlling the differential protection scheme to disable differential protection; - select a terminal (14) to be configured outside or inside the differential protection scheme; - communicate reconfiguration information between the plurality of terminals (12,14, 16, 18) through the communications network, reconfiguration information including the selection of the terminal (14) to be configured outside or inside the differential protection scheme, wherein the communications network is any of the following: a daisy chain communications network; a ring communications network; a mesh communications network; a star communications network; a cabled communications network; a tree communications network; or a hybrid thereof; - after communicating the reset information between the plurality of terminals (12,14, 16, 18), modify a respective differential protection algorithm on each unselected terminal (12, 16, 18) to configure the selected terminal (14) outside or into the differential protection scheme; and - control the differential protection scheme to reactivate the differential protection.
