A system and method for commissioning includes an actuator for engaging a friction element to couple input and output elements to transfer torque. a control system initiates friction element actuation through the actuator when a friction element velocity is below a ready-to-operate threshold speed. The friction element is placed in the ready-to-operate state to prepare the friction element to transfer the torque from the input element to the output element without delivering torque to the output element. The friction element is kept in the ready state when the speed is below the ready state threshold speed. The actuator completes the friction element actuation when the speed reaches the change point, engaging the friction element to deliver torque to the output element.
