A vehicle communication system is provided. The vehicle communication system includes a first communication system, a second communication system and a controller. The first communication system is configured to communicate via first type of communication signal to at a least one first remote communication system. The controller is configured to select between use of the first and second communication systems based on at least one of a predicted availability of first and second communication coverage during a travel route and an anticipated number of handovers needed in a defined window of time.
