An anisotropic composite assembly comprising a first layer having a tensile modulus different from its own compressive modulus and exhibiting variable modulus behavior. The first layer elastically buckles under compression. The second layer has a tensile modulus that is substantially the same as its own compression modulus. The first layer and the second layer are joined together, the assembly is bendable in a first direction when the outer surface of the first layer is in a compressed state, and the assembly is bent in the first direction. While there is a first bending stiffness. The assembly is bendable in a second direction opposite the first direction when the outer surface of the first layer is in tension, and the assembly is bent in the first direction while bending in the second direction.
