PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for obtaining sugars by effectively hydrolyzing biomass without adding acids, enzymes or catalysts.;SOLUTION: Disclosed herein is a method for producing sugar comprising a step of heating a solid biomass containing lignin in the presence of gaseous oxygen donor to obtain a heat-treated material and a step of hydrothermal treatment in which the heat-treated material is subjected to hydrothermal treatment to obtain sugars. The oxygen donor is one or more of oxygen, oxygen-enriched air and air. In the heat treatment step, the biomass is heated at a temperature of 150-300°C.
