Distributing the carbon fibers or nanotubes in a molten polymer phase comprising one or more molten polymers; and a continuous shear strain event in the molten polymer phase such that the molten polymer phase continuously breaks the carbon fibers in each event. In addition, a method of forming a carbon fiber reinforced polymer matrix composite by creating reactive edges on broken carbon fibers that react and crosslink with one or more polymers. The composite material exhibits improved mechanical properties such as stiffness, strength and impact energy absorption.
