To provide a miniature charged particle trap for mass spectrometry.SOLUTION: A miniature electrode apparatus for trapping charged particles includes, along a longitudinal direction, a first end cap electrode 102, a central electrode 104 having an aperture 108, and a second end cap electrode 106. The aperture 108 extends through the central electrode 104 along the longitudinal direction to define a transverse cavity for trapping charged particles. The aperture 108 in the central electrode 104 has a ratio of a longitudinal dimension to a lateral dimension of greater than 1.5; a major dimension is the distance of the longest straight line, and a minor dimension is the distance of the longest straight line traversing the aperture in the direction perpendicular to the line corresponding to the major dimension; the lateral width in a direction parallel to the straight line corresponding to the minor dimension in the aperture 108 is constant along a part of the straight line corresponding to the major dimension; and the transverse cavity has a size 2zin the longitudinal direction of less than 1 mm.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1A
