The present application relates to a use of a mixture (6) comprising iron and a chemically inert granular carrier for treating mercury polluted water. It also relates to a mercury polluted water treatment device containing a filtration reagent (5, 6, 7) which comprises the mixture (6) of iron and the chemically inert granular support. It also relates to a method for treating water contaminated with mercury by such a device comprising a step of introducing a volume of water into a chamber (1) of the device; a step of transit of the volume of water in contact with the filtration reagent (5, 6, 7); a step of precipitating the mercury, with the iron of the granular iron-carrier mixture (6), comprising a mercury reduction step and a mercury microdroplet formation step; and a step of extracting the volume of water out of the device.
