The invention relates to a method and to a system for determining an optimum driving strategy to be adopted by a motor vehicle (1) when said motor vehicle (1) approaches a traffic light (2), the method including a step of receiving, by an on-board system (10) on said motor vehicle (1), a message emitted by said traffic light (2), and a step of determining a total distance of the course separating the motor vehicle from the traffic light. According to the invention, the method also comprises determining at least two driving strategies which the motor vehicle can adopt in order to travel said total distance; estimating the amounts of pollutants emitted by the motor vehicle by adopting each of said at least two driving strategies; and selecting, from said at least two driving strategies, the optimum driving strategy for which the amount of pollutants emitted is the lowest.
