FIELD: chemistry.;SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for treating sulphur residues of a refinery process in which said residues are converted to coke in a coke oven. Described is a method for treating petroleum coal in which said petroleum coal is converted to coke in a coke oven in which said petroleum coal is crushed and mixed with calcium carbonate before coking; characterised in that the obtained mixture is compacted before coking, and in that part of the calcium carbonate, together with a portion of the sulphur contained in said petroleum coal, is converted with subsequent coking to calcium sulphide.
