The present invention relates to a system for detecting rainfall and calculating rainfall at lower layers using properties of microwave attenuation upon rainfall, and a method thereof. More specifically, the present invention relates to a system for detecting rainfall and calculating rainfall at lower layers using microwave link, which is to detect rainfall and estimate rainfall at lower layers using properties of which transmission power of microwave is attenuated by rainfall. The present invention further relates to a method thereof. Based on microwave attenuation data calculated from an observation data collection module, an observation data processing module, and an observation data processing module, the rainfall is detected and verified by applying window size, mean microwave attenuation, test statistic of microwave attenuation, threshold value, and microwave reference attenuation to a rainfall detection and verification module. In addition, an R-k relation for each microwave link is estimated by applying, to an R-k relation estimation module, microwave attenuation (rain-caused attenuation, k) caused by rainfall calculated in a microwave attenuation calculation module upon rainfall and rainfall intensity (attenuation-caused rain rate, R) causing microwave attenuation calculated in a rainfall calculation module (500) causing microwave attenuation. Accordingly, by applying the microwave attenuation caused by rainfall to a lower layer rainfall estimation and verification module, it is possible to estimate and verify rainfall at lower layers.
