Effective identification of transactions processed by a software application such as a server application is disclosed. In one embodiment, transactions are identified by applying a set of rules for determining whether some patterns are in communication to communication between the client and the server. For example, these rules find some combinations of parameters in transactions. As a special example, these rules are used to look up parameters in HTTP requests. These rules are organized in such a way that efficient processing takes place. For example, rules are organized based on the frequency with which parameters are expected to occur in transactions and the frequency with which each transaction is expected to occur. These rules are updated if the expected frequencies differ from the actual frequencies, so these rules can be organized for more efficient processing.
