The present invention relates to a positive electrode active material of which a surface of lithium transition metal oxide as a positive electrode active material for lithium secondary batteries is modified by nano-sized alumina. The present invention further relates to a production method thereof. To this end, lithium transition metal oxide and alumina sol, obtained by peptizing commercialized boehmite powder in acidic deionized water, is mixed with water, and gelation of the alumina gel during a drying step and formation of thin coating films on a surface of the positive electrode active material take place, thereby leading to the production of powder without agglomeration. Therefore, when the powder is heat-treated at 400-800°C for 1-10 hours, it is possible to produce powdered positive electrode active materials for lithium secondary batteries surface-modified by nanoalumina without agglomeration.
