Disclosed are a mechanical switching surge and transient voltage current limiting device, and a method thereof, which can be improved without replacing an existing mechanical switch by limiting switching surge of the mechanical switch and excessive voltage and current generated by the charging of a capacitor, by connecting, in parallel, TSM having control units for controlling the mechanical switch and a thyristor, which is a power electronic device, with the mechanical switch connected to a condenser or a first transformer. The mechanical switching surge and transient voltage current limiting device comprises: at least one thyristor connected with a capacitor bank including a mechanical switch and condenser; a current transformer connected with the at least one thyristor in series and connected with the mechanical switch in parallel; and a control module controlling the opening and closing of the mechanical switch and turning the thyristor on and off. According to the present invention, the mechanical switching surge and transient voltage current limiting device and the method thereof can reduce switching surge and charge overcurrent by using existing equipment at costs less than TSC and with a size similar to TSC, and can maintain conduction loss.
