Methods and apparatus for non-invasive analysis of the structure and chemical composition of bone tissue that eliminate the effects of surrounding tissue are provided. The method comprises at least four electrodes (1,2,3,4) arranged in electrical contact with the tissue surrounding the analyzed bone, preferably a long bone, so as to establish a screening potential distribution using the screening electrodes (7, 8) , 5, 6, 7, 8) systems. The measuring current injection electrode 1, 2 is used to keep the measuring current flowing through the internal part of the analyzed bone. Simultaneously, the screening electrodes 7, 8 reduce the measured current flow through tissue surrounding the analyzed bone to almost zero. Then, the phase difference between the measurement current and the potential at the measurement current injection electrodes (1, 2) as well as the potential at the measurement current injection electrodes (1, 2) is measured. Based on the measured electrical values, the structure and chemical composition of the bones are evaluated.
