The invention relates to a method for determining the content of plastics (microplastics) in the suspended matter of water samples or waste water samples under defined and controllable laboratory conditions. For this purpose, the suspended matter sample is dried to a weight constancy and the content or ignition loss thereof is determined. The content of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, sulfur, and/or nitrogen in the suspended matter sample, in the dry suspended matter sample, and in the residue on ignition is determined by an elemental analyzer. The calculation of the plastic content then takes place by determining the mass balance of the water-free and ash-free sample and one of the following material balances: the carbon balance, the hydrogen balance, the oxygen balance, the sulfur balance, and the nitrogen balance.
