The present invention provides a method for producing 11α-hydroxylated steroid compounds or derivatives thereof by fermentation of natural sterols or by biotransformation of various steroidal synthons with recombinant bacteria, preferably Mycobacterium smegmatis or Corynebacteriumglutamicum. Said recombinant bacteria carry a plasmid comprising a synthetic operon containing the genes cyp509C12 and roCPR1 from Rhizopus oryzae, which code for cytochrome CYP509C12 with 11α-hydroxylase activity, and the cytochrome reductase (RoCPR1) needed for activity of the cytochrome. Using the method described in the present invention, 11α OH-ADD or 11α-OH-AD can be produced from natural sterols such as cholesterol or phytosterols, and 1α-OH-PROG, 11α-OH-DOC, 11α-OH-TEST, 11α-OH-DHEA, 11α-OH-AD and/or 11α-OH-ADD can be produced from the corresponding non-hydroxylated synthons, amongst others.
