An apparatus (1) for storing and retrieving large volumes of test tubes (4) in / from a warehouse (2), apparatus comprising: an input / output module (6) of test tubes (4) from / to an automation system (3) for transporting said test tubes (4) in transport devices (5) of individual test tubes (4), which includes two different coplanar locations for a first and a second container (9, 10) of a plurality of test tubes (4), a single collection device (62) adapted to collect said test tubes (4) from the second container (10) located in said input / output module (6) and for releasing them in said transport devices (5) of individual test tubes (4) in said automation system (3), a first station (70) for the temporary distribution of said containers (9, 10) in different locations of the same shelf (71) comprising one or more shelves (71) and interconnected with said input / output module (6), characterized in that the apparatus further comprises: a multiple collection device (60) adapted to collect said test tubes (4) from a plurality of transport devices (5) of test tubes (4) individual queued in a secondary lane (31) of said automation system (3) and to release them in the first container (9) located in said input / output module (6), a second station (74) for the temporary distribution of the first container (9) on one or more shelves (71), interconnected with a discharge device (13) of test tubes (4) to be removed, and a motorized mobile elevator (8) capable of simultaneously transporting, in two different coplanar locations, said first and second containers (9, 10) and adapted to move said first and second containers (9, 10) of test tubes (4) between said first station (70) for distribution temporary and said warehouse (2), and only dec or first container (9) between said warehouse (2) and said second station (74) for temporary distribution.
