The invention relates to a system and a method for identifying faults of mechanical origin in metallic or composite structures. According to the invention, the system comprises a structural block consisting of the structure to be monitored and a number of piezo-active sensors, distributed at a predetermined range, an acquisition block comprising a programable analogue multiplexer which successively couples the active sensors at the input of an electromechanical impedance analyzer within the acquisition block, a software and warning block comprising a computer unit and a display/warning block, the computer unit receiving data (Re Z(ω)) from the electromechanical impedance analyzer, with a view to processing them and establishing wether the number of resonance peaks for the data (Re Z(ω)) in a given frequency range, increases as compared with the initial number determined in reference conditions.
