ABSTRACT The present invention relates to a vanadium flow battery system development, more specifically relates to the beneficial effect of D-fructose as an additive to the negative electrolyte. The presence of D-fructose (i)enhances the area of the graphite felt negative electrode, by wetting, thereby the current dueto V2+/V3+ redox reaction at a given overpotential, (ii) suppresses the H2 evolution at negativeelectrode and (iii) controls the VO2+accumulation at the positive electrolyte by way of redox reaction between crossed-over D-fructose with VO2+. Theamount of VO2+reduced depends on the controlled addition of D-fructose via cross-over, which maintains the redox balance betweenthe negative and positive electrolyte. Hence, an optimization of concentration of D- fructoseat the negative electrode, could improve the capacity retention with number of cyclesin vanadium redox flow battery system.
