In order to be able to recognize in the thermal separation of a part to be cut (208) a possible cutting interruption already during the separation, the present invention suggests a process to detect an imminent or already occurring cutting interruption, wherein in an area cutting, a power input occurs, and comprises the following process steps: a) requesting the part to be cut (208) with a first change signal; b) recording a second change signal generated by the first change signal on a measuring electrode (207) spaced from the part to be cut (208); c) determining the lag between the first and second shift signal upon emission of a lag signal; d) comparing the lag signal with a predefined upper limit value and a predefined lower limit value for the lag signal.
