a method for identifying a spot in a tissue (10), the method comprising the steps of: performing near infrared reflectance spectroscopy to obtain spectral data from the spot in a wavelength range varying from a wavelength to shorter wavelength to a longer wavelength, the shortest wavelength having a value of 1595 nm or more; access the known spot reference spectral data (33); and comparing the spot spectral data with the known spot reference spectral data to identify the spot.
