The present invention provides farmed animals and methods for raising recipient animals for sphematogonic stem cell transplantation by modulating the nanos gene. In one embodiment the genetic modification is used to breed animals with insertions or deletions (indels) that inactivate or otherwise modulate nanos gene activity so that the resulting males do not have functional germ cells even though they retain functional somatic cells. , and females are fertile. These males can then be transplanted with donor spermatogonic stem cells and used for breeding.
