PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steel for mechanical structure excellent in rolling motion fatigue life characteristic after high frequency induction hardening, and excellent in machinability and hot roll workability in manufacturing process.SOLUTION: There is provided a steel for mechanical structure suitable for applications to components having a rolling motion face which is rolled by contacting opposite members, containing, by mass%, C:0.40% to 0.70%, Si:0.01% to 2.00%, Mn:0.03% to 0.40%, S:0.015% to 0.048%, Cr:0.01 to 2.00%, Al:0.001 to 0.050% and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities with satisfying the formula 1 and the formula 2. Formula 1:90S+2C+5√Mn7.50. Formula 2:1.5Mn/S13.4. The steel can be controlled to have the number of MnS having an equivalent circle diameter of 10 μm or more of 5 or less in MnS existing in an observation area of 10 mmafter high frequency induction hardening and tempering.
