PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mode multiplexer demultiplexer capable of improving insertion loss and reducing wavelength dependency of the insertion loss, and a method of manufacturing the same.SOLUTION: The present invention relates to a mode multiplexer demultiplexer consisting of a waveguide WG1 capable of propagating a plurality of modes and a waveguide WG2 capable of propagating a specific mode. Reference widths W1, W2 of the waveguides WG1, WG2, an isolation GAP and a section length L of a proximity section between the waveguides WG1, WG2, and a specific refractive index are adjusted similarly to conventional arts, and the waveguides WG1, WG2 are varied in width along a propagating direction of light so that a wave fron of a field of forward propagation of an input field from an input end of the waveguide WG2 matches a wave front of a field of inverse propagation of an output field from an output end of the waveguide WG1.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
