A vehicle door lock latch actuator 102, for a taxi, comprising a first movable linkage connected to a remote user input 110, e.g. inner door handle or release button, a second movable linkage connected to a door latch, and an engagement element movable between a first (operable) state in which movement of the first linkage is transmitted to the second such that the user input is connected to the door latch and a second (inoperable) state in which movement of the first linkage is not transmitted to the second linkage. The engagement actuator being driven, e.g. by electric motor or solenoid, in response to signals from a controller 118 based on predetermined criteria. The criteria may be a speed exceeding a threshold, brake pedal position etc. and may use sensors such as accelerometers, proximity sensors, optical sensors. The system may return to the first (operable) state under failsafe condition such as power failure. Also claimed is a system and method of converting an existing door latch to the present system.
