A method for operating a start-stop system of a motor vehicle and a start-stop system are described. In the method, data is collected that characterizes an imminent stop of the motor vehicle. It is then determined whether, for the characterized imminent vehicle stop, activation of the start-stop system to turn off the vehicle engine during vehicle stop is more efficient in terms of fuel economy and / or ride comfort than continuous vehicle engine operation during vehicle stop or not. If it is determined that turning off the automobile engine is more efficient, the start-stop system is activated and the vehicle engine is switched off during the vehicle stop. With the knowledge of the upcoming stop, it is thus possible to make the stopping process as efficient as possible.
