A method for operating a track of the opinion that assistant (12) of a motor vehicle (10), comprising the steps of: determining whether a driver of the motor vehicle (10) an intention to switch lanes of a currently traveled lane (28) to an adjacent lane (30); applying a steering torque on a steering wheel (20) of the motor vehicle (10), which is a lane change of the motor vehicle (10) of the currently traveled lane (28) on the adjacent lane (30) is made more difficult, as long as no intention to switch lanes of the driver is determined; reduce the steering moment which impedes the lane change, as soon as an intention to switch lanes of the driver of the currently traveled lane (28) on the adjacent lane (30) is determined; wherein the reduction of the steering moment which impedes the lane change takes place only if, before the determination of the intention to switch lanes of the driver is connected with a passing maneuver lane change of the adjacent lane (30) on the currently traveled lane (28) has been determined. Furthermore, the invention also relates to a track of the opinion that assistant (12) for a motor vehicle (10).
