Synchronous machine having a rotor winding as a field winding, comprising: a stator (1) on which a polyphase armature winding (3) is wound; a rotor (4) having a rotor core (5) on which a field winding (6) is wound and having a rotor shaft (7) which is rotatably supported by a housing (9), the housing (9) supporting the stator (1 ); an inverter circuit (20, 30, 40) which controls the phases of the armature winding so that a polyphase armature current is formed, wherein a fundamental component of the armature current in the stator (1) generates a rotating field which rotates at an electrical angular velocity, which coincides with the rotational speed of the rotor (4); Current blocking means (12, 15) connected to the field winding (6) for suppressing a current direction of an induced alternating current induced in the field winding (6) in response to the armature current flowing through the armature winding (3); wherein the inverter circuit (20, 30, 40) supplies to the phases of the armature winding (3) a polyphase rotor exciting current component superimposed on the fundamental wave component of the polyphase armature current and in the form of a pulsed high frequency waveform corresponding to the respective phase voltages is superimposed on the vicinity or neighborhood of its zero crossings such that the overlay extends over a period of ¼ or less of one period of the fundamental component.
