In an external calibration method of a marine displacement observation system using an internal time delay, a transmission wave is first transmitted to a target object through a transmission antenna. Then, the reception wave reflected from the object is received via the reception antenna. Thereafter, the relative distance between the transmitting antenna and the receiving antenna is changed in the lateral direction. Next, raw data having a two-dimensional data form of a bit frequency with respect to the azimuthal positional displacement of the receiving antenna is generated by receiving the receiving wave received from the receiving antenna whose relative distance with the transmitting antenna is changed . Then, positional displacement data corresponding to a predetermined bit frequency is extracted from the raw data having the two-dimensional data form to generate directional signal data. Thereafter, the directional signal data is converted into a function of the positional displacement and phase to generate phase change data. Subsequently, a phase unwrapping operation is performed on the phase change data to extract the system delay. Subsequently, the distance to the object is corrected using the system delay.
