The invention relates to a drive unit (10) for a motor vehicle and to a method for operating a motor vehicle, comprising an electric machine (11) and a shiftable transmission (14), which has at least one speed and an idle position, and comprising a control unit (13), which is designed to control the electric machine (11) in order to control a rotational speed of the rotor (12). The transmission input shaft (15) is connected to the rotor (12) of the electric machine for conjoint rotation. A hybrid drive (20) additionally has an internal combustion engine (18), to the output shaft (19) of which the rotor (12) of the electric machine (11) can be coupled for conjoint rotation.
