The method and system comprises of providing a seal that at least partially prevents fluid communication between gases from outside the previously mined area with the one or more gases in the previously mined area; and reducing the variation in differential pressure across the seal by providing a substantially sealed pressure balancing chamber located at or adjacent to the seal, such that any variation in the differential pressure across the seal is prevented by substantially equalizing the pressure of one or more gases in the previously mined area relative to pressure of gases in the balancing chamber without allowing fluid communication between one or more gases in the previously mined area and gases outside the previously mined area.IAN 14 16 24 28 32 100 34 26 22 36 12 25' 38 /18 Figure 1
