Use of nanoparticles of at least one oxide of at least one transition metal doped with a rare earth, obtained by a sol-gel, as sensitive material in a chemical sensor for detecting or dosing vapors of one or more compounds or target molecules; wherein the nanoparticles are present in the sensor in the form of a solid thin film of nanoparticles, preferably mesoporous, said thin film characterized by a thickness of 2 nanometers to 1 micrometer being; preferably from 100 nm to 300 nm, for example 200 nm.
