Method and equipment for the measurement of ammonium based on electrochemical detection for water quality control applications, the method comprising incorporating and flush a water sample in a measuring cuvette provided with means for measuring the concentration of ammonium; and, while stirring the sample and verify that its pH is below 2.5, record an initial potential (P0) of ammonia concentration and incorporate a volume of a basic solution to the water sample. After verifying that the pH is greater than 10, register a first potential (P1); incorporate a first volume of a standard solution; register a second potential (P2); incorporate a second volume of standard solution; record a third potential (P3) and calculate the theoretical value of the ammonium measurement in the water sample from the initial, first, second and third potentials by standard addition.
