The housing (1) has two electrical connection elements (11, 12), and an overvoltage protection component (13) i.e. varistor. The protection component is electrically connected to the two connection elements, where temperature of the connection elements increases in the presence of overvoltage. A mechanical switch (17) is connected to a locking unit (15) i.e. low-temperature brazing. The locking unit releases the switch to an open position when a temperature of the protection component exceeds a critical point. The locking unit is arranged electrically independent of the mechanical switch. The critical point lies between 100 and 240 degrees Celsius. An independent claim is also included for an overvoltage protection device.
