The present invention describes a bentonite composite material and a sol-gel silica alkaline solution as a binder, of relatively light weight, capable of adsorbing heavy metals present in water. Said material is composed mostly of expanding clay which maintains it intact when inmersion.To afford this effect, the lightweight, porous and water permeable material receives a heat treatment of up 400°C to 1400°C, thus giving rigidity and resistance to lower impacts and allowing to acquire the insolubility property when immersed. The aforementioned material possess a density of up 700 kg/m3 to 1,500 kg/m3 and a compressive resistance in the range of up 12 kg/cm2 to 16 kg/cm2. The material is related primarily to the metal-mechanic and mining industries effluent sanitation, as well as natural contamination of surface and subterranean waters. The heavy metal ion adsorbent material may include fly ash and/or zeolites to supplement the adsorption capacity, as well as embossments of volcanic origin as coarse aggregate, as a porous material that can provide water permeability and reduce costs acting as filler particles. The preparation method no requires high energy consumption or involve large installations. This cementitious composition comprises bentonite, which allows including fly ash and/or zeolite, and binds to an alkaline chemical solution of silica under conditions of pH 7 by the sol-gel process.
