The nanotechnology that is being developed with silver and its applications has a great commercial future. However, in many cases the colloidal silver solutions have impurities produced by the chemical production method; these compounds such as Br and Cl can cause toxic effects. In many products the silver concentration cannot reach the desired values, because increasing the silver concentration means increasing the toxin dose. In the present invention an original production method of high purity aqueous silver solutions is presented (non-toxic impurities). In the present invention, a second innovation is reported. These particles are: icosahedron, decahedron and platelets with FCC or HCP type (111) surfaces. These surfaces are the most active to destroy the bacteria, fungi and virus membranes. These particles have a controlled shape and size. The third innovation is that the solutions have a higher concentration of silver ions and positively charged nanoparticles, causing them to be attracted to bacteria, fungi and viruses, increasing the antibacterial activity. This is achieved by injecting oxygen into the nanoparticle solution for 15 minutes. Uncoated silver nanoparticles with faces (111) and charged species, is a highly efficient antibacterial, antiviral and fungicide, with a high spectrum and with an enormous potential for the treatment of nosocomial infections. This technology was applied to develop new products such as disinfectant solutions with silver nanoparticles, suture threads with silver nanoparticles, medical bandages and curation gauzes with silver nanoparticles, as well as, silver nanoparticles supported on BP clay, montmorillonite and clinoptilolite. The particles are also embedded in polymers such as polyethylene, PMMA, chitosan and others to produce antibacterial catheters, all of them, with an antibacterial and antiviral effect. The properties of these particles that make this an original patent, is that the surface is completely free of toxic substances like Bromine, commonly present in the extra components of the solution. An additional advantage is the size control of the particle. This is an important condition for toxicity free applications.
