The modelling of an adaptive antenna system in the application of DOA estimation and beamforming of linear antenna array to enhance the performance is provided. A complete modeling of an adaptive antenna system using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique had been done by building codes using the MATLAB (R2013a) software. This was performed by taking the phase of the incident signals on a linear antenna array as input and optimizing it to locate the DOA of the user. Thereafter, the steering capability of the adaptive antenna array was achieved by varying the phase of the element in the linear antenna array and optimizing it to steer the main lobe in the users direction and lower gain towards interferers direction. The results provided showed that the proposed DOA algorithm had a better angular resolution (without any specific number of snapshots and exact angle of arrival of incident signals). The computational complexity found was less as it did not require covariance matrix and sub-space calculations. The estimation of computational time is less to estimate the direction of users. Also, the result revealed that main beam, null placement and beam steering ability of the adaptive beamforming was better for low values of SNR. The PSO based adaptive antenna system showed improvement of the performance for low strength of the desired signal. Besides, fewer numbers of iterations were required to converge.
