Communication is an essential part of our life and with the advent in technology, the use of devices for communication are increasing rapidly and it resulted in enormous growth in mobile technologies. Mobile phone requires electricity for charging its battery. There are many places where till today electricity has not reached but people have mobile phones due to ease of availability. Mobile users living off-grid typically go through exhaustive measures and pay a nominal fee to charge their phone. In todays era, there is a rise in interest toward alternative form of power sources due to adverse effect of typical power generation techniques on environment. Availability of solar energy in abundance is among those alternative power sources. This paper deals with viability of implementing a solar based mobile charger and development of portable small scale mobile phone charging device. Solar energy is non-polluting, reliable and has numerous advantages over nonrenewable energy sources. It has a major pitfall that it is available during daytime. The drawback can be exploited by using battery banks for charge storage and this turns this device to be a hybrid type. The block diagram of complete system is shown in figure no.l. The device consists of AC to DC charging system (A-DCS) where household 220 V AC is provided for conversion to 5 V DC, 5 V solar based charging system (SBCS) and a chargeable battery (CB). This portable charger provides facility of tapping power from ADCS, if power is not available from A-DCS then the device automatically taps power from SBCS. If power is not available from both the charging system, mobile is charged by CB. The entire circuitry is shown in figure no.2. The portable device is suitable for various applications with some minor changes in the output capacity. A universal serial bus (USB) mainly facilitates our users to charge a number of mobile phones.
