The invention discloses a quenching process to enhance mechanical properties of wrought components and can also extendable to cast components especially towards the core of components cross-sections. The process of the invention is a retarded quenching process for quenching of a steel alloy component, characterized in that said process comprises the steps of austenizing, soaking, air-cooling, followed a step of hardening by quenching in a liquid mixture of water, and polymer or oil. It has been a major challenge to attain superior mechanical properties while minimizing distortions and risk of quench-cracking by hardening heat treatment of components of complex shapes made from alloy steels, typically in automotive components such as front axle beam, steering knuckles, etc. which have varying thicknesses etc. The distortion or warping is caused by the volume changes associated with phase transformation and thermal gradient which may even lead to cracking. The present invention optimizes the mechanical properties and distortion compared to conventional quench of complex shape components.
