Cu loaded mesoporous ZrO2-MCM-41 nanocomposite were prepared by in situ and wetness impregnation method at ambient temperature by taking Cu (NO3)3 as Cu source. Different wt. % of Cu (2, 4, 6 & 8) was loaded on mesoporous support ZrO2-MCM- 41 which was prepared from zirconium butoxide, tetra ethyl ortho silicate and cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide. Nearly 100 % reduction of Cr (VI) (20 mg L-1) has been achieved by 2 Cu/ZrO2-MCM-41 in 30 min time. Intra particle mesoporosity, high surface area, presence of well dispersion of Cu onto the support material ZrO2-MCM-41 and electron transfer properties are the key factors for enhancing the photocatalytic activity of 2 Cu/ZrO2- MCM-41.
