The present invention discloses a synergistic composition for the production of high alumina based refractory castable bonded solely with mullite precursor sol. Conventional use of silica sol in alumina castable restricts the high temperature application. Hence mullite sol is a better alternative as it is stable at much higher temperatures, like applications in iron and steel industries. Mullite sol was synthetically prepared by using chemical grade materials and the same was used in the castables with different particle size distributions (PSDs), by varying distribution coefficients as per Dinger and Funk model. Conventional processing technique of the castable was used and well sintered density and strengths were obtained at 1650°C, which temperature is much above than any conventional castables. Absence of impurity in the castables nullifies the formation of any liquid phase, as confirmed by phase analysis study of the matrix phases. Also strength values are quiet high, as high as 800 kg/cm2 was obtained, which indicates good compaction and densification in the compositions. Thus the developed castables compositions are suitable for very high temperature applications.
