The ash is dissolved and subjected to a process that recovers sodium sulfate and burkeite. potassium and chloride concentration is reduced, at least in part, by subjecting the ashes to adiabatic cooling in a crystallizer producing glaserite and a chloride-rich purge stream. By leaching from glaserite, sodium sulfate is removed from the glaserite, leaving potassium sulfate. Recovered sodium sulfate and burkeite can be recycled and used as pulp forming chemicals. chloride and potassium removed may be further treated appropriately or disposed of.
