Abstract Method for the Synthesis of n- (phosphonomethyl) Glycine or one of its derivatives selected from the group consisting of their salts, their phosphonate esters and their phosphonate ester salts The present invention relates to a method for the synthesis of n- (phosphonomethyl) glycine or one of its derivatives selected from the group consisting of their salts, their phosphonate esters, or their phosphonate ester salts which includes the steps of: • a) forming, in the presence of an acid catalyst, a reaction mixture comprising 2,5-diketopiperazine, formaldehyde and a compound comprising one or more chemical portions of pop anhydride, said chemical portions having an oxidizing p-atom (+ iii ) and the other oxidizing p-atom (+ iii) or (+ v), form?,? '- bisphosphonomethyl-2,5-diketopiperazine, its mono to tetraphonate esters, the dehydrated forms of?,? '- bisphosphonomethyl-2,5-diketopiperazine and the esters of and phosphonate of its dehydrated forms; B) hydrolyzing said n, n'-bisphosphonomethyl-2,5-diketopiperazine, its dehydrated forms or its phosphonate esters to obtain n- (phosphonomethyl) glycine or one of its derivatives selected from the group consisting of their salts , their phosphonate esters and their phosphonate ester salts.
