abstract method for determining a length of a medical component for use with an ultrasound imaging system including a probe; method for determining a needle length by a needle guidance system; and needle length determination system for an ultrasound imaging device including an ultrasound probe a guidance system for assisting in the insertion of a needle or other medical component into a patient's body is disclosed. The guidance system utilizes ultrasound image acquisition or other suitable image acquisition technology. In one embodiment, the guidance system comprises an image acquisition device including a probe for producing an image of a target internal body part, such as a vessel. One or more sensors are included with the probe. The sensors detect a detectable needle-related characteristic, such as a magnetic field of a magnet included with the needle. The system includes a processor that uses data related to the detectable characteristic detected by the sensors to determine a needle position and / or orientation in three spatial dimensions. In yet another embodiment, systems and methods for determining the length of the needle to be guided by the guidance system are disclosed.
