PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a further improved scale carrier for an encoder.SOLUTION: The present invention relates to a scale carrier for an encoder that has a carrier body 1 comprising an electrical insulating material at least in a part thereof and a metal substrate 3. A measurement scale 15 is provided on a first surface 10a of the carrier body 1. A second surface 10b being the other side of the first surface 10a of the carrier body 1 closely contacts with the metal substrate 3 and the carrier body 1 is immovably joined to the metal substrate 3. An auxiliary body 2 extends in parallel to the carrier body 1, being in contact with a surface 32 of the substrate 3 which does not face the carrier body 1. The auxiliary body 2 is separated from the carrier body 1 with a distance of the thickness D of the metal substrate 3 and is immovably joined to the metal substrate 3.
