This method for producing an outside joint member (1) includes: a pre-forging step for executing, for example, four forging steps in sequence, and as a result, sequentially molding a rod-shaped material (M) into first through third intermediate products (M1-M3), and then into an intermediate forged product (21) which has a cup section (22) having tracking grooves roughly formed on the inner-diameter surface thereof; and an ironing step for molding the intermediate forged product (21) into a final forged product having finished tracking grooves (5). Furthermore, the third intermediate product (M3) prepared in the pre-forging step is configured in a manner such that: one end surface (M3a) thereof has an endless third mark (M3b) formed thereon by deforming the outer-peripheral part (Mb) on one end of the rod material (M); and the entirety of this third mark (M3b) is positioned outside, in the radial direction, of the region on the one surface (M3a) on which pressure is to be applied by a punch (32) for molding the cup section (22).
