An ultrasound system and method for acquiring a series of ultrasound images of the carotid artery during the delivery of contrast agent is described. Plaques in the image are identified and a temporal intensity curve is calculated for the pixels in the image. The luminance values before and after the arrival of the contrast agent are compared to identify pixels or groups of pixels that have perfusion. An anatomical image showing areas in the plaque image can be formed for luminance and the presence of perfusion, or the perfusion is quantified by determining the percentage of pixels indicating perfusion in the plaque image Can do. The extent and degree of perfusion is an indicator of the risk of plaque particles in the bloodstream that can lead to stroke-related symptoms.
