The nuclear reactor includes a core containing fissile material disposed within the reactor pressure vessel, the reactor pressure vessel carrying at least a vessel penetration that carries exclusively the flow entering the reactor and the flow exiting the reactor. It has one container penetration part. An integrated isolation valve (IIV) system comprises a passive IIV with a non-actuator check valve, each built into a forged flange, and an active valve with an actuator, each built into a forged flange 1 One or more active IIVs. Each vessel penetration that carries exclusively the flow entering the reactor is protected by a passive IIV having a forged flange connected directly to the vessel penetration. Each vessel penetration carrying the flow exiting the reactor is protected by an active IIV having a forged flange connected directly to the vessel penetration. Each active valve can be a normally closed valve.
